Domo!
There are a lot of doujinshi (also known as fanbooks, onlybooks, love books, or variety shows) out there, with stories and art ranging from the comic and chaste to the outer limits of what is physically possible for the exceptionally limber.
However, unless you have a title in front of you so that you can flip through it, you have to rely on cover scans and vendor descriptions to decide if it's something you'll enjoy. Some of the time this works. However...
We know that many people -- waves to potential readers -- suppress their interest in the genre because they are afraid of buying something they will be uncomfortable with. Or they think it's all yaoi. Or that what's not yaoi is hentai. (Those last two - not correct.) On the other hand, we hear a different group mention being disappointed with on-line purchases ("they said hentai yaoi, but it was really pretty tame").
Too spicy, not spicy enough... where's "just right"?
E-mails began to fly back and forth about this topic in mid-November 2002. (Thank you Suzuki, Lady Rioki, Eriko Myoujin, Elf, and Stirling Twilight for representing such a wide range of current and potential DJ readers, and for being so very articulate about your likes, dislikes, and how personal boundaries get drawn.) The idea of a review site with clearly-defined ratings criteria grew as the need for a more objective ratings system was underscored again and again.
Well, so those are our goals, then: first, to be information central for YGO doujinshi titles; second, to attempt to create a simple way to rate and review titles according to simple, unambiguous criteria. We would be delighted if vendors used our system, because if it works as we're hoping, everyone (including parents) will be able to make informed decisions and it'll match up books and buyers more smoothly. Vendors will be happy, parents will be happy, readers will be happy. Happy happy happy happy!
Write ygodj@yamifarao.net if you have ideas, suggestions, corrections, problems submitting your review, or want to help collect doujinshi information.
"Unoriginal Trash or the Future of Manga?" is an article on doujinshi on the AnimeResearch
site,
and the source of our new favorite phrase, oishii
tokoro dake! ("only the yummy bits!").
The article has an extensive bibliography. Very impressive.

We intend this to be primarily a Yu-Gi-Oh review site, since when we started this we weren't able to find any already existing. (Write us if we're wrong - send links please.) There is a very nice scanslation site (apparently in progress) at KaibaCorp 2nd Floor which includes many YGO titles, but it has no reviews.
Thanks to Jacq we now have an
HTML-based review form that will collect your data and email
it to us ( well, as long as you have Javascript enabled and a
POP3 mail client on the machine you're sending from ...) It also
has a button to make it easier to send scans directly to our
server (or you can attach scans to the review email). The
review page now also has a downloadable Word-based review form
(Major thanks to Salmacis for betaing.) A text-based "form"
is coming soon.)
If you don't want to write a full review but would like to help gather information, feel free to use the form (or simply email us). We are happy to acknowledge contributors to this site!
NOTE: Scans of covers / interior pages will be used to determine bibliographical information and to make review thumbnails ONLY, and will not be distributed. Don't write us asking for doujinshi scans - we don't do that. Period. Any emails requesting scans will be ignored. We respect the artists who created these books, and we won't rip them off. We also respect the people who shelled out cash for these doujinshi, and we won't rip them off either.
The goal of this site will be to provide accurate, objective information, since it's hard to make good decisions based on bad data. The rating criteria are pretty concrete, but people make mistakes ... they miss a crucial panel or two.
Since we have no way to verify information, I'm hoping that, if you see a title you're familiar with rated incorrectly, you can give us a head's-up. If you spot an error that would change a title's rating, please let us know (a scan or digital photo of the page or frame in question would be super, but it's necessary). Send the information (please don't forget to include the doujinshi title) to ygodj@yamifarao.net.
We will fix incorrect information as quickly as we can, but please understand we have no control over (and hence no liability for) transactions between consumers and vendors.
Yu-gi-oh is copyright 1996 Kazuki Takahashi and Konami. No infringement or disrespect is intended by the discussion on these pages of characters created by the copyright holder.
All artwork shown is copyrighted to its respective circle/artist. PLEASE SO NOT STEAL THE ARTWORK FROM THIS SITE! We have listed the copyright (as best we can) for every doujinshika's work shown, cause we're just that way. No copyright infringement is intended by our non-commercial use of the images: in fact, we have only respect and awe for these artists, and hope that sites like ours can publicize the amazing work that's being done.
By the way, don't ask for "scans" - we don't do that. Period. Any emails requesting scans will be ignored.
If you like a picture, buy the fan book! (There's probably lots more pictures like the one you like inside) You'll be helping to make sure the artists don't starve over there in their garrets.
The intention of this site is to provide information. Unfortunately, since we'll be relying on data we won't always be able to verify, errors inevitably will occur.
We'll edit incorrect information as quickly as we find out about it, but keep in mind that you are wholly responsible, and we have no liability, for any transactions you decide to engage in as a result of the information posted here.
We are hugely indebted to Suzuki Linn, Lady Rioki, Eriko Myoujin, Elf, and Stirling Twilight for representing such a wide range of current and potential DJ readers. All have been very articulate about their likes, dislikes and how lines get drawn. A big thank you also to non-otaku friends Barb, Kevin and Lisa, and various life partners who patiently put up with babbling enthusiams.
